Industrial Engineering & Management

Head of Department: Dr. G. S. Prakash

About the Department

Overview

The department was established in the year 1979 as Industrial & Production Engineering and renamed as Industrial Engineering & Management in the year 1992, with an intake of 60 students and M.Tech. program was commenced in the year 2012. The department has been recognized as an R&D center by VTU with 11 scholars pursuing their Ph.D. The department has well modernized laboratories, namely Industrial & Quality Engineering lab, Computer Lab and Mechanical Measurements & Metrology lab. The department is having highly qualified, motivated and result oriented faculty members. All the faculty are involved in research and technical paper publications in reputed technical journals and conferences across the world. The department was accredited by the NBA in 2001, 2004, 2010, 2015 & 2022 as per the new NBA format laid down by Washington Accord. It has consistently bagged university ranks in Bangalore University & VTU. It has set a unique record of achieving 1st rank eleven times. The department has successfully conducted around 40 faculty development programs, seminars & workshops for academicians as well as industry personnel, students and technical staff. The society of Industrial Engineering and Management, “INDEMAN SOCIETY”- a student body was established in the year 1996. The activities of this society include regular industrial visits, and guest lectures are conducted twice every semester for all students. The department also has Quality Engineering Club, Materials & Manufacturing Club and Productivity Club, where the students can enroll to carry out activities based on their interest. Many funded research projects are executed that are sponsored by UGC, AICTE, DST, VTU and VGST.

Vision

To produce globally competent Industrial Engineers, Researchers and Entrepreneurs capable of developing solutions to continually improve socio-technical systems and add value to the society.

Mission

The Industrial Engineering and Management department shall transform the entrants of the Industrial Engineering and Management program into professionally competent engineers through: • Innovative educational curricula • Balanced research program • Effective collaboration with industry and academia

Labs & Infrastructure

Mechanical Measurements & Metrology Lab

Mechanical Measurements & Metrology Lab

The Mechanical Measurements and Metrology (MM&M) Lab provides hands-on training in precision measurement, dimensional and angular metrology, calibration, form and surface measurement, machine-tool inspection, and metallurgical characterization. The laboratory develops students’ practical understanding of measurement principles, accuracy, precision, errors and uncertainty, instrument calibration, dimensional inspection, and quality evaluation of engineering components and materials. The laboratory provides facilities for linear and angular measurement, dimensional and form inspection, surface characterization, instrument calibration, machine-tool alignment and performance evaluation, cutting-force measurement, coordinate-based inspection, and microstructural examination. These facilities enable students to apply metrology principles to engineering components and materials and gain practical exposure to precision measurement, manufacturing inspection, quality control, and computer-aided measurement techniques. The laboratory also supports microstructural examination and specimen preparation, thereby extending practical learning from dimensional and geometric inspection to material characterization. Overall, the MM&M Lab integrates precision metrology, manufacturing inspection, machine-tool evaluation, calibration, and material characterization, providing students with practical exposure relevant to modern manufacturing and industrial quality-control practices.

Computer Lab

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at Ramaiah Institute of Technology has a well-equipped computer laboratory to support teaching, learning, laboratory exercises, and project work. The laboratory provides students with hands-on exposure to industry-relevant software used in industrial engineering, operations management, enterprise resource planning, statistical analysis, accounting, and manufacturing applications. The major software facilities available include Solid Edge for computer-aided design and modelling, Arena for discrete-event simulation and system analysis, SAP-ERP for enterprise resource planning and business process management, SYSTAT for statistical analysis and data processing, and Tally for accounting and financial management applications. The laboratory enables students to apply theoretical concepts through practical exercises, simulation studies, data analysis, ERP-based applications, CAD modelling, and project work. The facilities also support interdisciplinary learning and help students develop industry-oriented computational and analytical skills essential for careers in Industrial Engineering and Management.
