About the Department

Overview

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1962 to prepare students for careers in all fields of engineering and also carry out basic and applied research work. The department consists of eight well-qualified and experienced faculty members; eight of them are Doctorate holders. The Department also has five non-teaching staff. The main activity of the department is to teach engineering chemistry theory and Laboratory courses to the undergraduate engineering students of all disciplines. Department is also involved in teaching technical chemistry and Instrumental methods of analysis for III and IV semester BE Chemical Engineering students, along with respective laboratories. The Department is a recognised research center by VTU. All faculty members are actively engaged in research, and 18 research scholars have registered for PhD. The department is constantly organizing conferences/ seminars and FDP programs. The department conducts the International ‘Australian National Chemistry Quiz’ by The Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Australia. Faculty pursue research in materials chemistry, electrochemistry, polymer science and green chemistry, supported by modern analytical laboratories and collaborative projects.

The department strives for Development of curriculum viewing emerging trends in technology with a balanced approach towards Institute Industry interaction and academic excellence, along with research in Basic Sciences.

Mission

Providing outstanding teaching and quality training in chemistry to all students at all levels and in all disciplines, and also developing and maintaining research programs of National and International relevance and serving society through unique expertise and talent found in the department.

Engineering Chemistry Laboratory

The Engineering Chemistry Laboratory is equipped with essential facilities and instruments to support undergraduate teaching and hands-on laboratory training for BE 1st-year students. The laboratory provides facilities for basic analytical and experimental chemical analysis, pH, conductivity, potentiometer, and colourimeter instruments, a water deionizer unit, an electronic balance, a hot-air oven, a fume hood, and a water bath. Achievements

The Department of Chemistry has been recognized as a Research Centre by VTU since 2008.

A total of 27 PhDs have been awarded as of August 2026.

Faculty members have published approximately 800 research publications, with an average of 80 publications per year.

A total of 50 patents have been published/granted.

The Department has undertaken 15 completed projects and 2 ongoing projects.
